Fire-damaged Southington plant had 20 OSHA violations

Rex Forge, the iron and steel forging plant in Southington, Conn., damaged by a fire last week, has paid $13,443 in fines for 20 violations in the past five years, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) said. Eleven of the violations are labeled “serious,” according to OSHA records, with the more serious violations ranging from improper use of portable electrical equipment to unsafe exits and problems with fire extinguishers.

There’s no indication of any connection between the violations and the fire on Tuesday, July 31st , which injured three workers and sent about 1,000 gallons of oil into the Quinnipiac  River, according to Christine Dempsey from The Hartford Courant. All 20 of the violations have been taken care of, agency records show.
