July EA preview: Dartmouth students collaborate on pump design in Haiti

In the July issue of EA, meet Robert Cholnoky, who studied engineering sciences at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. This past winter, he visited Haiti, currently the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Along with three fellow classmates, Cholnoky performed site assessment as part of a project whose objective is to determine the most cost-effective water pump solution for Fond des Blancs – a town within the region of Sud. The community is difficult to access, has little development and almost no infrastructure.

In completing the bachelors of engineering degree, students are required to take a two term project course. Cholnoky was matched with this particular project because it is in keeping with his skills and mission. In next month’s article on how some businesses in the industry are migrating to pump service and repair, you can learn more about how Robert Cholnoky and three of his fellow classmates collaborated to design a solar-powered pump system to meet the demands of the community.
