April EA Preview: How to protect your computer from identity theft and viruses

The vast possibilities of the Internet have allowed businesses to sell products, manage their infrastructure, and connect with co-workers and customers. Unfortunately, this open playground has made identity theft and computer viruses all too common.

Fast Forward’s “Digital Defense 101” in the upcoming April issue of Electrical Apparatus Magazine will cover how to protect yourself from losing sensitive data like credit card information, social security numbers, addresses, and phone numbers that can be accessed from foreign sources. Pesky viruses, spyware, and malware can cause significant slowdown or a complete shutdown of a computer’s operating system, which can lead to widespread plant or motor shop stoppage.

Small businesses are the most vulnerable to these cyber threats. According to the 2013 Internet Security Threat Report from Symantec, there was a 42% increase in targeted attacks in 2012, and 32% of all attacks were aimed at businesses with fewer than 250 employees. Luckily, there are a variety of defensive measures one can take to prevent these digital horrors.
