July EA preview: A community saves one of the few electricity programs in the U.S.

July is our annual training issue and this year will feature an article on the impact of a high school electricity program in Chicago. Last summer, administrators with Simeon Career Academy High School decided to cut its electricity program due to budgetary concerns and lack of interest.

The program’s teacher, Latisa Kindred, along with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 134, were able get the course reinstated for 2014-15 school year.

This article will shed a light on how high school vocational programs have fallen by the wayside, and why it’s important to keep them as an option for young people. Here’s a sneak peek at my class visit after it was saved.
