Sing, swim, and study – 2015 NECA Convention headliners

The National Electrical Contractors Association, which bills itself as the “voice of the electrical construction industry,” has chosen three voices to spearhead its annual convention, to be held October 3-6 this year in San Francisco. Educational pioneer Sal Khan, long distance swimmer Diana Nyad, and singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins highlight the convention’s guest list this year, and will deliver opening and closing speeches and a closing celebration performance, respectively.

NECA is headquartered in Bethesda, MD and has 119 chapters across the country. The organization serves the industry through innovative research, performance standards, progressive labor relations, and workforce recruiting and training. This year’s free trade show will feature approximately 300 exhibitors from the industry, and the benefits of 19 free technical workshops.

“Just as Diana Nyad achieved her Xtreme Dream at age 60, our Convention in its 61st year has become the extreme resource for the entire industry,” said NECA President David A. Hardt, president, Hardt Electric Inc., Chicago, Illinois, in a news release.

“Over three days, we’ll offer the latest education, training, new products and services, unparalleled networking, and demonstrate how electrical contractors are fast becoming integrated systems contractors in low-voltage work – including lighting, communications, security, fire, life safety and other automated building systems,” said Hardt.

The headliners all bring uniquely impressive resumes:

Khan founded the nonprofit organization Khan Academy in 2006 and has presided over its exponential growth while partnering with institutions such as NASA and MIT to provide a revolutionary free educational network.

Nyad is best known for her achievements in swimming- circumventing Manhattan island (1975); reaching Florida from the Bahamas (1979); and most recently becoming the first confirmed person to swim from Cuba to the United States in 2013. She has written three books.

Loggins has sold over 16 million records, including 12 platinum albums, and won 2 Grammys over the course of an acclaimed career that ranges from children’s music to soft rock and soundtrack hits.

The convention will take place at the Moscone Center South. Membership is not a requirement to attend.
