Where work and fun intersect: Finalists for the 2017 Edison Awards

Edison Universe has released a list of finalists for the 2017 Edison Awards, honoring “the best in innovation and innovators,” and providing a glimpse into the future.

Vibram, of Albizzate, Italy, is nominated for its advanced cold-weather gripping shoes (look for more on this in the upcoming March issue of EA). Similarly adventurous offerings include an inflatable stand-up surfboard (Tripstix), sunglasses that can talk and coach you through your workout (Oakley/Intel), and a portable electric scooter with a discrete three-wheel platform from Immotor.

This year’s innovators haven’t neglected the workplace…several companies familiar to EA readers are recognized within the Energy and Sustainability category. Finalists are Danfoss‘ oil-free centrifugal compressor for the commercial HVAC market; General Cable‘s heat-dissipating technology for overhead conductors, for the power grid; software technology for utilities, from Tendril; and ultra-fast rechargeable aluminum battery from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Stanford University; and solar solutions from Ecoppia (a solar cleaning system), Azuri (solar options for smaller home installations), and Greenlight Planet (payment plans to ease solar sticker shock).

In Applied Technology, element six, whose synthetic diamonds are used in wind turbine bearing sets and high-voltage power devices, has a product to treat highly contaminated industrial effluent streams. Aluminum processing innovation comes from Arconic Engineered Products and Solutions, known for its OEM and wind turbine materials. Modumetal adds new nanolaminated alloys to its offerings for energy and other industries. Other finalists addressed sustainability and water conservation.

A list of all finalist entries can be found here. Winners will be announced at a banquet April 20 in New York City. The awards are named in honor of inventor Thomas Alva Edison.
