Roberts Expands

Longtime Maryland motor shop opens second location

Roberts Electric Motors, a Frederick, Md.-based business, has expanded, adding a second location in Boonsboro, Md, about 30 minutes up the road. The company will now have two centrally-located Maryland locations that can serve an area spanning from southern Pennsylvania to northeastern Virginia, as well as Washington, D.C. and Baltimore to the east. Roberts Electric (or REM), is an EASA authorized service center that has provided sales, repair, balancing, rebuilding and onsite service of electric motors for almost 40 years.

“Al Roberts opened REM 39 years ago in Frederick, and in 2017 opened a new second location in Boonsboro,” Brian Roberts, of the company’s sales department, told EA in an email, also noting that the Frederick location has moved in the past from 5841 Urbana Pike to 4507 Metropolitan Court. A family-oriented legacy presides over REM. The aforementioned Al Roberts, the company’s founder, started as a technician in the field of electric motor repair in 1960, moving into management in 1972. Six years later, he opened Roberts Electric Motors Inc., offering complete electric motor repair and replacement.

In 2004, his son, Dwayne A. Roberts, took over the business, having been involved in the company since it opened in 1978. Dwayne is the current president and CEO.

Rewinding and rebuilding services include single phase motor repair, polyphase motors up to 800 hp, wound rotors, AC generator rewinds, brush shifting motors, and rotating and static welders. Mechanical services include dynamic balancing, preventative maintenance, PTO generator repair, pump repair, and vibration analysis.

REM’s expansion provides yet another example of how motor repair businesses can still expand against daunting odds in the climate of 2017.
