Fire, explosion at plastics plant force evacuation; no one hurt

Merrimack, N.H., Fire and Rescue teams were called to the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Plant on Daniel Webster Highway at around 6:30 AM on Monday for a report of an explosion and fire in the plant, according to reports online. A machine reportedly exploded in the rear of the building, and heavy, black smoke was seen emitting from the facility.

Employees were evacuated from the building while firefighters tackled the blaze, which had spread to the roof and ducts of the building.

According to the InfoNH Facebook site, the fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Saint-Gobain will be one of the exhibitors at CWIEME Chicago, the annual coil winding expo, which will take place this year at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center from October 3-5. The French-based company makes various “high performance” materials, with the New Hampshire plastics plant specializing in polymers used for insulation, and protective film products used in certain electronics industry applications. Its foams and tapes solutions support circuit board components, printed circuit board masking, semiconductor masking, wire and cable, EMI and RF shielding, and release film processing aid applications.
