Going Once, Going Twice

Bid now, visit later for a timely auction in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

For Midwesterners, late May into early June is always a good time to visit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Catch-and-keep season has just started for most fishermen, temperatures finally begin to rise, and the rivers and waterfalls usher in kayak and canoe enthusiasts. If you’re in the Midwest and fancy combining any of the above with a business interest, an industrial equipment auction could double the worth of your trip.

Industrial-strength equipment, machinery and parts from Milwaukee-based WEC Energy Group‘s Presque Isle coal-fired power plant in the Upper Peninsula—which was retired on March 30—are being sold in an online auction ending June 4, officials announced Tuesday. WEC shut down the plant (pictured, below right) in March and is replacing the electric generation site with two natural gas-fired power plants, the utility holding company said. A three-phase online auction for items from the 65-acre site on the shore of Lake Superior in Marquette, Mich., is being conducted starting May 21 by NRI Industrial Sales, which specializes in the marketing and sale of industrial equipment.

Sounds like an ideal opportunity put in your bids over the next few weeks, and book a hotel for three weeks from now when you go to pick them up. Register here for Phase 1 of the auction now to browse the selection, which includes electric motors, lathes, hand tools, and coil winding materials (among many other options).

Inspections are strictly by appointment only, per NRI and aucto.com, the host site. All visitors without an appointment will be turned away. Inspections will be held May 20 and 21 from 8:00 am- 4:00 pm at the asset locations site: 2701 N. Lakeshore Blvd., Marquette, MI, 49855. Please call the Auction Department @ 1-855-550-7745 or auctions@nri-isd.com to set up appointment times.

The Presque Isle shutdown and re-purposing is part of a recently unveiled clean energy initiative by WEC, which pledged 40 percent carbon emissions reduction by 2030 (80% by 2050) and $14 billion in investments by 2023 towards electrifying the company’s fleet and “modernizing electric and natural gas delivery infrastructure”, according to a WEC press release April 18.

Items to be liquidated in the first phase, which ends at 10:30 a.m. May 22, include MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) spare parts, machine shop equipment and machinery, hand and electric tools, test equipment, tool cabinets, ladders, carts and other plant support equipment.

The second phase, which ends at 10:30 a.m. June 4, includes process equipment, coal handling equipment, pumps, motors, instrumentation, valves, air compressors, diesel generators, filter press, screeners, heat exchangers and condensers.

The auction’s third and final phase ends at 10:30 a.m. June 18. Liquidated items include electrical substations, transformers, motor control centers, DCS (distributed control system) cabinets, recycled materials, consumable metals and more.
