Big contract for Siemens Gamesa

The company has received a massive turbine order for Dominion’s Virginia Project

Siemens Gamesa has been selected to provide offshore turbines for Dominion Energy’s 2,640-megawatt project off the coast of Virginia.

Karl-Erik Stromsta, managing editor of GTM (Green Tech Media), described the deal as “not only among the largest offshore turbine orders in history, but also among the largest the global wind industry has ever seen,” and, he continued, “It will further bolster the case for investment into the essentially nonexistent U.S. offshore wind supply chain.”

For its part, Dominion, which touts its commitment to become “the cleanest energy company in the United States, agreed, “It is also an important stepping stone toward commercial-scale offshore wind development, furthering Dominion Energy’s commitment to 3,000 megawatts of solar and wind energy under development or in operation by the beginning of 2022.”

Installations of the turbines are expected to be completed by end of 2026. The offshore project will be located 27 miles offshore of Virginia Beach, and when completed is said to be able to generate enough electricity to power 650,000 homes.
